About this episode

Mike from LDS Discussions argues that the story of Adam and Eve, which most biblical scholars read as an ancient origins myth, becomes a problem for Mormonism precisely because Joseph Smith and the prophets who followed him insisted on treating it as literal history. This is the eleventh installment of his series with John Dehlin reviewing Mormon truth claims, and the first to move from the Book of Mormon into the Bible itself.

Mike starts with the two different creation accounts in Genesis 1 and 2 and the traditional dating of Adam and Eve to about 4000 BCE, then turns to how the Bible was actually assembled and what that means for a church that teaches “plain and precious truths” were stripped from it. From there he lays out the specific claims Joseph Smith made about Adam: the vision in Doctrine and Covenants 137 in which Joseph says he saw both Father Adam and Michael, even though the church would later declare them the same person; Joseph F. Smith’s later vision in section 138; and the way the idea of Adam as the Ancient of Days appears in Sidney Rigdon’s writing in 1834 before Joseph adopts it.

John and Mike then take on the Adam-God doctrine, and John makes the case that Brigham Young, who was reluctant even to call himself a prophet, would not have pushed the teaching so hard if he had not gotten it from Joseph. Mike explains what the journal of John Nuttall, Brigham Young’s secretary, reveals about how the temple ceremony script was written down under Brigham Young, and the two close by looking at how apologists have tried to reframe the story as metaphor, and why that reframing undercuts the church’s own claim to unique scripture, unique history, and a living prophet.

Mike previews the next topics in the series: the global flood, the Tower of Babel, Deutero-Isaiah, the long ending of Mark, and the Sermon on the Mount.
